GLP-1, Metabolic Balance, or both? Here's the cost and benefit breakdown

If you've been thinking about a GLP-1 medication, or you're already on it and wondering whether you need any extra support, or if it's worth the investment, this post is for you.
There's a lot of noise out there right now about weight loss injections. Some of it is hype, some of it is fear, and not much of it talks about what actually happens to your body when appetite suppression is doing the heavy lifting. And with the significant investment in GLP-1s, some people think they can't also invest in a nutrition program. But the maths, the results, and the health outcomes tell us that it is a sound investment.
Let's look at this properly.
What are we comparing?
GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide work by mimicking a gut hormone that signals fullness and slows gastric emptying. They're effective and a game-changer for people with chronic overweight. They can also come with real costs, both financial and nutritional, that don't always get talked about.
My Metabolic Balance program is a personalised nutrition program built around your individual blood results. It focuses on blood sugar regulation, meal timing, and food quality to support your metabolism from the inside out.
Both can support weight loss and metabolic health. But they work very differently, and the combination changes the picture again.

The cost reality - show me the money!!
GLP-1 medication only
Most people start at around $400 per month. That sounds manageable until you factor in that doses often increase over time, pushing costs to $500 to $700 or more per month. And because GLP-1 medication often needs to continue indefinitely to maintain results, this is not a one-off investment.
Over 12 months, you're looking at somewhere between $5,000 and $7,200 or more depending on how your dose progresses. That's a significant ongoing commitment.
Metabolic Balance program only
The program is $1,495 plus $195 for the blood tests required to personalise it, totalling $1,690 for a three-month program. After that, there's no ongoing fee. The investment is one-off, and the skills, habits, and knowledge you build stay with you for a lifetime.
GLP-1 plus Metabolic Balance
The combined approach costs around $2,890 in the first three months, then reverts to your medication costs only. The program does not recur. So over 12 months, you're looking at the medication cost plus $1,690, compared to the medication cost alone indefinitely. With the potential increasing medication costs when used as a single solution. this combination, in helping to avoid escalating costs, represents better long term value.
The question isn't really which is cheapest. It's which gives you the best return on what you're spending.
What does each option actually give you?
Results
Weight loss is one of the main reasons people start on GLP-1 medications. Average weight lost is between 9-15%. My Metabolic Balance patients lose an average of 10kg within their 3 month program with me, and continue to lose more afterwards.
Both options successfully reduce inflammation and the risk of long term chronic health conditions. There are many other reasons that people decide to either start a GLP-1 or a personalised nutrition program including cognitive benefits, cardiovascular health, fatty liver reduction. The benefits of addressing underlying health issues and being proactive are vast, and both GLP-1s and personalised nutrition can help.
Appetite reduction
GLP-1 medication reduces appetite significantly through its pharmacological effect. Metabolic Balance achieves appetite regulation naturally through blood sugar balance, protein adequacy, and meal timing. Combined, the effect is amplified and more sustainable.
Muscle preservation
This is where GLP-1 medication alone has a real gap. When you're eating significantly less, your body doesn't automatically protect muscle. Without enough protein and the right nutritional framework, muscle loss alongside fat loss is common.
Metabolic Balance builds adequate protein into your personalised plan from day one. For anyone on GLP-1, this isn't optional. Muscle is your metabolism, and losing it makes long-term weight maintenance significantly harder.
Nutrient sufficiency
GLP-1 reduces how much you eat - studies show from 16-39% reduction. That's the point. And this may sound great if we are just looking to reduce calories. But it also reduces how many nutrients you're getting, and if you're already eating a fairly average diet, that gap widens quickly.
Fatigue, hair loss, gut upset, and brain fog are some of the more common complaints I hear from people on GLP-1 without nutritional support. A personalised plan ensures you're meeting your needs even on lower food volume.
Blood testing
My program includes functional blood testing so I can generate a unique plan for you ($195 fee). This is not a standard GP panel. We're looking at markers like fasting glucose, thyroid, iron, triglycerides, vitamin D, and key nutrients that give us a full picture of what's going on metabolically and where your gaps are. We can even add more tests in if your clinical picture warrants it.
GLP-1 medication on its own includes no nutrition-focused testing.
Long-term habits
This is the big one. GLP-1 medication is effective while you're taking it. But for most people, stopping the medication means the appetite comes back, and if the underlying eating patterns haven't changed, so does the weight. Weight can start to come back within 4-8 weeks of stopping.
Metabolic Balance teaches you how your body responds to food. You build a framework for eating that works for your metabolism specifically, not a generic set of rules. That knowledge doesn't disappear when the medication does.
Gut health
GLP-1 medications can cause nausea, constipation, or other gastrointestinal side effects, particularly in the early weeks. A whole food, gut-supportive nutrition plan can help manage these significantly. Without it, side effects are often what lead people to reduce their dose or stop altogether. I actually like to work with people to resolve underlying issues like constipation before starting their GLP-1 so the impact is less when they do start.
What happens when you stop
On GLP-1 alone, the evidence consistently shows weight regain is common after stopping medication. Without a nutritional foundation in place, the body returns to its previous patterns fairly quickly. This is a beautiful, protective mechanism that the body does, but it's also really frustrating when you're the person putting weight on.
With Metabolic Balance in the mix, you're using the medication window to build lasting habits, protect muscle, and recalibrate your relationship with food. That positions you very differently for life after medication.

So, is a GLP-1 or Metabolic Balance right for you?
If you're considering a GLP-1 medication or already taking it, the most important question is not just whether it's working. It's whether you're giving your body the support it needs to make the most of that window. Only yuo and your doctor can decide if it appropriate for you.
If you're not on GLP-1 and looking for a metabolic reset through food alone, Metabolic Balance does that very effectively. The blood results drive everything, so it's specific to you rather than a generic plan you could find anywhere.
And if you're on GLP-1 and feeling tired, losing muscle tone, struggling with side effects, or worried about what happens when you eventually come off it, that's exactly what the combination is designed to address.
The medication suppresses appetite and food noise. The program teaches your body what to do with that opportunity.
